As heatwaves become more common, prison conditions cannot be overlooked

Many of us have felt the impact of the recent heatwave – struggling to sleep, seeking shade, or simply trying to stay comfortable in soaring temperatures. We all know what 36°C heat feels like. Now imagine facing those conditions without being able to open a window, change your bedding, or access something as basic as cold water.

During prison visits, the interim IMB National Chair has seen first-hand how extreme heat can affect people living in often overcrowded environments, where opportunities to keep cool may be limited. As periods of high temperatures become more frequent, it is important to consider their impact on everyone, including those living behind prison walls.

In response to these concerns, interim IMB National Chair, Jane Leech wrote to HMPPS highlighting direct evidence. The letter raised concerns about the effect of extreme heat on prisoners and staff, particularly older prisoners, those with health conditions or disabilities, and those living in poorly ventilated accommodation. It also highlighted inconsistencies across the prison estate, including reports that some prisons charge prisoners for fans while others provide them free of charge.
