The 2022-23 annual report for HMP North Sea Camp is now published.

In its first annual report, the HMP Five Wells Independent Monitoring Board (IMB) highlights the difficulties of opening a new prison. HMP Five Wells’ functionality as a rehabilitation and resettlement prison has been hindered by a lack of experienced staff and structural design faults.

Efforts to improve regime restrictions caused by unprecedented staff shortages have been welcomed by the Swaleside Independent Monitoring Board (IMB) in its 2022-23 annual report. By reducing the prisoner population through relocation and utilising detached duty officers from other prisons, the leadership team have managed to ease pressures. As a result, prisoners now have increased time out of cell and access to work, education and religious activities.

For several years the Independent Monitoring Board at HMP Send has highlighted the lack of IT provision at the prison, so the continued dearth of digital technology at Send remains a significant concern. The Board’s latest annual report can only conclude that the prison is failing to prepare prisoners for life in a digital society.
