What you need to be an IMB volunteer

Be over 18 years of age.

Live within 30 miles of the prison or immigration detention facility or a reasonable distance for travel.

Commit to around 2 – 3 visits a month (sometimes more during the induction period) and regular attendance at monthly board meetings.

You do not need any special qualifications or experience. We provide all necessary training and support.

HMP/YOI Aylesbury

HMP/YOI Aylesbury is a prison and young offender institution for adult males aged 21 to 27 and young men aged 18 to 20 serving long-term sentences.

HMP Grendon is a category B men’s prison which has been established as a therapeutic community for adult males serving long determinate or life sentences.  It is jointly managed with HMP Springhill, an open category D prison offering men the opportunity to experience resettlement and full-time work.

Board members are expected to undertake around 2-3 visits a month and attend Board meetings, flexibility will be considered where possible to accommodate work and care commitments. You need to work well as part of a team, be enthusiastic and open minded, with the ability to make sound objective judgments. Candidates are required to live within 30 miles of HMP Grendon / HMP Springhill.

HMP Brixton is a category C resettlement prison for adult males. Provision includes the London Pathways Unit which provides treatment for prisoners with complex needs arising from pervasive psychological difficulties.

You need to work well as part of a team, be enthusiastic and open minded, with the ability to make sound objective judgments. HMP/YOI Feltham is a young offender institution that holds young people aged 15-18 and young adults aged 18-21.

HMP/YOI Isis

HMP/YOI Isis is a category C training prison for young adult and adult male prisoners. In 2020 the prison began to implement The Young Adult Strategy and is now moving to become a prison for young adults between 18 and 21 years, and category C men up to 27 years.

You need to work well as part of a team, be enthusiastic and open minded, with the ability to make sound objective judgments.
